Welcome to the “South Downs Folk Singers” NEW Blog!
This replaces our old Blog but is modelled upon the work done by our friend and fellow singer Keith who developed and managed the original site. He is sadly missed and we are indebted to him for his many contributions to the “South Downs Folk Singers”. This new Blog is dedicated to his memory.
About Us
The “South Downs Folk Singers” (SDFS) began life following a Heritage Lottery Funded project in partnership with the South Downs Society, about the heritage and songs of the South Downs. This finished in 2013 and the SDFS was formed to continue singing together, since when we have added songs, harmonies and singers. (For more information about our history and the project use this link: "Songs Project".)
For those who don't know us, the SDFS is not a formal choir but a joyful group who sing traditional South Downs songs unaccompanied, as they may very well have been sung in homes, places of work and recreation in the past.
We now have three local groups, each meeting monthly to sing in Chichester, Lewes and Worthing at the following venues - (N.B. - please check our Diary Page for any temporary changes to these usual plans.)
WORTHING: First Thursday evening of every month, 7.15 for 7.30 until 9.30 pm.
The Barn, English Martyrs Church, Goring Way, Goring-by-Sea., West Sussex, BN12 4UE
CHICHESTER: Third Thursday evening of every month, 7.30 for 8.00 pm until 10.00 pm.
The Chichester Inn, 38 West Street, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 1RP.
(Please note for the June 20th 2024 session will be at the "Three Moles" pub Folk Evening in Selham)
LEWES: Third Monday evening of every month, 7.30 till 10.00 pm.
We are pleased to announce - NEW VENUE - The Lewes Arms, 1 Mount Place, Lewes BN7 1Y
We enjoy learning and singing songs together at our local meetings, and since 2013 some of us have sung in groups at public events. In keeping with our own origins, these occasions have usually been at charitable, educational or community events.
What’s On This Site
If familiar with our old Blog you will find some slight changes on this new site.
The "Old Posts" from our previous Blog have been saved onto their own page for reference. “Current posts” on this Blog continue on a separate page.
“Songs and Recordings” from the collection we have accumulated are now all together on one page in alphabetical order by song title. (These can be downloaded individually.)
"Other Songs to Try" shares, in date order, any new song ideas submitted occasionally by singers for us to sing for fun at our meetings and, if liked enough, to learn and add to our main "Songs and Recordings" page. "Songs Created By Us" highlights, in alphabetical order, the songs on these other two pages which have been created by members of the South Downs Folk Singers. (And now we also have a "Catches and Rounds" Page!)
For "New Singers" interested in joining us, and "Event Organisers" thinking of inviting us to perform, these pages have more information. And the "Diary Dates" page gives you a quick summary of what we’re up to next.
For Interest - other local songs projects have been run since the “South Downs Songs” workshops where we started - to know more use these links: "Secret Shore" and "Belloc, Broadwood and Beyond" - and have a look at our new "Miscellaneous" Page too.
We hope you find what you need from our Blog - but for more information, or if you’d like to sing with us, or want us to sing for you, please get in touch!
